How to Live with Dengue in Singapore

Introduction

It’s not even peak Dengue season yet and the number of Dengue cases so far has already exceeded the total number of cases in 2021! That is 5258 recorded cases last year, versus 7515 as of 13 May 2022.

As advised by The National Environment Agency (NEA) of Singapore, we are on track for a major outbreak. This is a serious concern because when Dengue cases continue to rise, an increase in the number of mosquitoes can expedite dengue transmission in areas with large dengue clusters compared to areas with a lower mosquito population.

Dengue fever has remained a public health problem in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak, according to Mr Desmond Tan, Singapore's Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment

This year, the month of March saw a spike in dengue incidence, with about 3,000 cases reported since the beginning of the year. The largest number of 444 cases was recorded in the last week of March. Historically, dengue fever has been the most prevalent between June and October.

As of 9 May 2022, Singapore now has 220 active dengue clusters
The largest dengue cluster is Cheng Soon, Eng Kong, Toh Tuck and Toh Yi areas with 352 cases so far, followed by Woodlands Ave 9, Woodlands Crescent, Woodlands Rise areas with 323 cases.
63 dengue clusters are on red alert
The new virus serotype 3 (DENV-3) has been detected in 48 red alert clusters.
This year, the Aedes aegypti mosquito population in Singapore was 48% higher than the previous year during the same period.

What We Can Do During Dengue Season

Given the severity of the dengue infections, we are highly encouraged to step up on the preventive measures against mosquito breeding, such as draining stagnant water and doing a complete wipe-out once a week.

2. Regularly check the NEA website for latest updates on the dengue situation including numbers of cases and clusters.

3. Download the myENV app on Apple store or Google Play to receive notifications on areas with a higher dengue population.

Get updates on weather conditions, food recalls, suspensions, and downgrading of food establishments, smoking areas, toilets conditions etc.
