Introduction
The World Health Organization mentioned in a March 2020 review that the Covid-19 virus can remain on surfaces from 2 hours up to 9 days. One year later, several studies across the world came to the same conclusion: transmission by surfaces is not the main way Covid-19 spreads. So what Covid-19 precautionary measures are we supposed to take?
Unfortunately, no one can say for sure as the virus evolves and takes on different forms, while researchers continue to make new discoveries about existing measures, including vaccinations.
Nevertheless, disinfection remains one of the Covid-19 precautions we want to continue with. In fact, we’ve observed the demand for disinfection services rise and fall alongside the number of Covid-19 cases. As more companies begin to offer disinfection services in Singapore, you want to know what you are really getting.
Here’s what you need to know:
Which Disinfection Products are Actually Effective?
NEA has an approved list of disinfectants that they continually update. You want to get disinfectant and cleaning products that contain the following active ingredients:
- Didecyldimethylammonium chloride
- Isopropanol
- Sodium hypochlorite
What to do before, during, and after a disinfection treatment?
Because the disinfectant is applied via misting, we need to do prep work to protect items like electronics and prevent food contamination. After the treatment, steps should be taken to ensure the treatment effects are optimised.
Before Treatment
- Be prepared to leave the identified room/space empty for the duration of the treatment and for 1 hour thereafter
- Store all food items and utensils in air-tight containers.
- Cover up or keep away all electronics, appliances, servers, and wiring.
- Close all windows and doors.
- The Service Technician should assess the entire premises to take note of sensitive areas and other concerns.
- The Service Technician should be dressed in full PPE (personal protection equipment) and have the right equipment.
During Treatment
- No one other than the Service Technician should be in the room/space that is being disinfected
- Doors and windows are to remain shut throughout the treatment
After Treatment
- Keep the treated room/space closed for 1 hour after the treatment is completed.
- After the 1 hour, open all doors and windows and ventilate the treated room/space for 30 minutes before resuming usage of the treated room/space.
How much does a disinfection service cost?
This should depend on the area size of the room/space that needs to be treated. Disinfection service for premises that have had positive Covid-19 cases would usually cost more too.
Of course, there is the perceived value of the company’s expertise and experience with disinfection services in comparison to their competitors.
It would be good practice to contact a few companies to get an idea of their procedures and price ranges before you decide on the one that best suits your needs and meet your standards.
